Any location in or around your home that receives about 8 hours of sunlight makes an ideal location for vegetable gardening in containers. The advantage of setting up container gardens, also sometimes called mini-gardens, is that they adapt to whatever space you have available as well as your personal tastes in food. Beyond this you’ll find that containers come in numerous shapes, colors, and materials, at least one of which should suit the overall ambiance of your home and yard.

Simple or Sublime

If you don’t need anything fancy, recycle old buckets, plastic bags, and even milk cartons. The plastic bags can hang over fences (put a few holes in, slide in a vine-vegetable, and you’re pretty well done except for on-going care). For any containers that do not offer drainage holes, always either add some tiny gravel in the bottom, or make your own drainage hole using a drill or hammer and nail. It’s very important that vegetable roots have proper dampness. Too much water, and they rot from the root up.

One word of caution, do not use any type of treated wood as a container. The powerful chemicals that extend the lifespan of the wood can leach into your edibles.

Potting Soil

Potting soil bears that name for a reason. It’s made to be light and filled with good nutrients. This doesn’t mean you won’t have to fertilize your pots periodically throughout the growing season, but it does mean you start out with a blend that supports healthy plant growth.

Kick Starting Vegetable Gardening in Containers

One great way to get your container garden off to a good start is starting the seeds in individual small containers like paper cups! Once the seeds peek their head above the soil wait for about another month, then move each vegetable into the container you’ve chosen for it. Place these as desired – on your porch, a deck railing, or even a doorstop.

The most successful vegetables for container gardens are the miniature cultivars or bush plants because they work well in smaller spaces. Herbs are also an excellent choice to round out your edibles. Lettuce and spinach are also good options for summer-long salads.

To give you an idea for spacing, a one gallon milk carton container can accommodate about 2 lettuce plants and one spinach plant. A 10-inch pot with a one gallon capacity will grow 2 dozen or more radishes.

You can grow plants in just about anything that will hold soil — polystyrene boxes, hessian bags, wooden barrels, old wheelbarrows, and so on. But when growing vegetables in containers you should not allow the roots to become soggy. Remember to drill holes in the bottom to allow for proper drainage.

Choose the right pot

Many gardeners first choose a pot for its aesthetic appeal; the earthy look of terracotta adds style to any garden, but plastic is definitely cheaper and has a number of advantages.

Let’s look at the advantages of three different types of garden containers:

• Terracotta

• Plastic

• Wood

Terracotta

Size is an important factor when considering terracotta or clay pots. Large pots filled with soil are extremely heavy, so it’s a good idea not to have to move them once planted. Smaller pots can be arranged in different heights on shelves or pedestals to give variety, perhaps to a bare space against a wall in a sunny position.

When using terracotta, be sure to soak the pots in water for a few hours before planting. Clay is porous and if filled while dry the pot will absorb precious water needed by your plants. For this reason, terracotta pots should be watered more frequently than most other types of containers.

PlasticPlastic containers may not look as pretty, but they have considerable advantages over the more fashionable clay varieties. Plastic is light but will not break easily, which means you can move your pots around the garden without too much effort. They come in all shapes and sizes, are cheap and store away neatly when not in use. Most gardeners and nursery growers use plastic containers when re-potting their plants.

Plastic is a non-porous medium, so it’s important to make sure the container has good drainage. Cover the bottom of the pot with a few centimetres of broken pottery or loose stones to keep the holes from clogging up with soil.

WoodLarge wooden tubs make excellent containers. Buy round barrels or build your own square boxes to fit into any available space. If making your own, be sure to paint the inside of your box with wood preserver suitable for growing food.

The simple box garden is great for growing different varieties of vegetables together. Try a mixture of zucchini (courgettes), cucumber, carrots and potatoes. Add marigolds to your vegetable mix for color and to keep away pests.

Unfortunately for them, most of these choices do not include vegetables. They eat lots of meat. I, personally, have nothing against meat. They eat lots of carbs. Pasta, potatoes, bread. All these are fine in moderation for most people.

But, left to their own devices, very few vegetables pass the lips of these two men. It’s not that they don’t know that we all need to get our veggies every day. It’s just that they have other things that distract and take priority. Like meat. And carbs.

Learning to Love Vegetables

How can you persuade someone who has maintained a lifelong distrust or indifference toward vegetables that these variously colored, sometimes unappealingly-flavored foods are actually worth eating?

I do have a suggestion to help encourage the love of vegetables in your children so that they don’t end up as veggie-haters. Grow your own!

We had a large backyard garden when the children were young. It was packed with all the usual suspects: peas, beans, tomatoes, etc. The kids never lacked for snacks during the growing season. They had my permission to snack as much as they wanted on peas fresh from the pod, tender beans, and sweet cherry tomatoes. These were considered a treat.

While the freshness and taste of home-grown vegetables is enough, in itself, to convince anyone of their value, children also benefit from working in a backyard garden. It is a wonderful learning experience for kids to see where their food comes from. If they choose their own seeds or plants, and dig in the dirt themselves to plant them, they can see and appreciate the amount of work that it takes to produce the food we eat every day.

Today’s norm is to pick up a snack, or drive through some burger joint to stuff our bellies so we can get on with work, and so slowly but surely, from the dawn of the industrial age, these products have come to replace what mother earth has given us, and what life itself is based on, as food.

Real food, which is basically fruits and vegetables, nutrition wise at least (as many would argue on the taste factor), is the foundation of any healthy diet, not because it is so important and healthy to eat a well balanced diet with vegetables in it, but simply because it is food. The rest is not food. It may be hard to grasp at the beginning, peeping through the little crack that all of us have in our definitions of what food is, and seeing the truth behind the screen of illusion.

Health, true health, cannot be achieved and maintained in any other way. But what is health? I dare you! Try and define it for yourselves. Go ahead, take a minute, even 5, and really try and write down a definition you would feel at ease with for the vague and illusive concept of health.
